Trailer, Caravan and Horse Float Weighing Report

Overview

We provide a professional and personal weighing service for all your vehicle and trailer requirements. This can include caravans, camper and hybrid trailers, horse floats, boat trailers, tradesman trailers, trade and fleet vehicles.

Before heading out on the road with a caravan, trailer, camper trailer or horse float in tow it is vital to ensure that your vehicle and trailer combination is road worthy, is safe to use, is well maintained, and that you are compliant with any relevant legal requirements for the states and territories you wish to visit.

Towing safely relies upon understanding the manufacturer’s ratings for your tow vehicle and the caravan, horse float or trailer combination that is being towed. Ensuring your vehicle and trailer are correctly balanced and that the weights are correct will make for a more enjoyable and safer journey without falling foul of the law. This report details relevant weights of your vehicle and trailer at the time of weighing.

This report provides a practical hands-on demonstration and explains:

GCM – Gross Combination Mass

GVM – Gross Vehicle Mass

ATM – Aggregate Trailer Mass

GAM – Gross Axle Mass

TARE – This is the unladen weight of the vehicle or trailer.

KERB Weight – This is the weight of the vehicle in its most basic form without any additions.

TBM – Tow Ball Mass weight

NSW “B” Condition Removal

Overview

A heavy vehicle licence with a condition “B” restricts the licence holder to driving heavy vehicles fitted with automatic or synchromesh gearboxes only. The licence holder is prohibited from driving vehicles with a non-synchromesh gearbox (also referred to as a Crash box).

To have this condition removed from your licence, you need to learn how to drive a non-synchromesh gearbox.  Although there is no minimum hours required training with this gearbox, it takes an average of approximately 20 hours before someone is competent in the use of a non-synchromesh gear box due to the complexities in operating this gearbox.  Training sessions are recommended in 2 hour or 4 hour slots and you can proceed to the assessment once you are competent in driving with a non-synchromesh gearbox.

Once the required standard is met you will be required to do an assessment/driving test. This will be conducted in accordance with RMS regulations and will be video recorded as a Transport for NSW requirement. The assessment is based on the HVCBA criteria.

  • Criteria 3 – Start, move off, shut down and secure
  • Criteria 4 – Manage Steering
  • Criteria 5 – Manages Gears
  • Criteria 6 – Manages Brakes
  • Criteria 7 – Manages Accelerator
  • Criteria 8 – Create & Maintain Crash Avoidance Space
  • Criteria 9 – Protect Crash Avoidance Space
  • Criteria 10 – Road Rules and Directions

Non-Synchromesh gearbox

The non-synchromesh gear box is sometimes referred to as a crash box and these gearboxes come in a 9, 13, 15 or 18 speed, depending on the truck.  The gearbox in our truck is an Eaton Fuller 18 Speed, with a low and high range lever as well as a gear splitter which enables the driver to use half gears.

When using half gears the gear changing technique changes from double clutching to a single clutch movement and the gear lever is moved in and out of the same gear position or to the next full gear position, but more on that as you progress through the course.

What makes this gearbox different is that the driver has to match the road speed (KM) and engine speed (revs) to enable a gear change to take place. These gearboxes require more driver input to ensure that you are able to change gears smoothly or at all. For every gear change the clutch is used twice, hence the term double clutching.

Overview

Do you load or drive a heavy vehicle? State and Territory legislation mandate that all loads are secure and safe on Australian roads.

Defensive Driving

Disclaimer

This is a non-accredited course and is therefore not nationally recognised.

Overview

Our Defensive Driving Course prepares the driver for the many challenges and risks faced on public roads. It is no longer adequate to just be a defensive driver.  As cars and trucks become more powerful and traffic levels become increasingly congested, today’s driver needs to be able to actively identify and manage the many risks they face while driving and reduce the risk of a collision. Whether you have just obtained your licence and are adjusting to being on the road for the first time, or you are simply looking for a refresher, your whole approach to driving will benefit from this course.

For company or fleet drivers, this course will help to minimise exposure to the risks of driving while on the job. Road crashes are one of the most common causes of work-related deaths and injuries in Australia. Preparing commercial drivers for the risks faced at the workplace while driving is an important part of any WH&S strategy. Our one (1) day Defensive Driving Course is only the start of a holistic driver training program.

Verification of Competency

Disclaimer

This is a non-accredited course and therefore not nationally recognised.

Overview

Does your employer require you to demonstrate your competency in a particular skill?

Under recent changes, Australian and offshore health and safety legislation now requires employers to ensure employees are competent in equipment operation and the tasks to be performed. Therefore an employer can no longer ‘assume an employee is competent’ from a given licence or qualification.

As a result a ‘Verification of Competence’ (VOC) assessment is available through Sutton Road Training Centre to complete your contractual and pre employment competency checks.
