Light Rigid (LR) Licence – NSW Drivers

Overview

An LR licence allows you to drive a rigid vehicle, including a bus or truck, that has a gross vehicle mass (GVM) greater than 4.5 tonnes but not more than 8 tonnes or which seats more than 12 people (including the driver). However, this class does not cover a vehicle that is towing two or more trailers, or towing a single trailer with a GVM over 9 tonne.

Course Details
Fees

One Day Course = $1,590 (your vehicle) or $1,690 (our vehicle)

2 hour Training = $405 (your vehicle) or $440 (our vehicle)

Assessment = $440 (your vehicle) or $480 (our vehicle)

Students are required to complete a minimum of 5 hours of training before an assessment. However we recommend you enrol in a one day course consisting of 6 hours of training followed by a 2 hour assessment session (8:00am – 5:00pm).

Alternatively, individual training and assessment sessions can be booked in the following time blocks:

  • 8:00am – 10:00am
  • 10:00am – 12:00pm
  • 1:00pm – 3:00pm

All students must:

  • Have a moderate level of English language.  You may be required to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment prior to enrolment
  • Be confident in driving a manual vehicle.
  • Have held a current drivers licence for a minimum of one year (provisional licences are accepted).
  • Be a minimum of 18 years old.
  • Have completed a Driver Knowledge Test from a Service NSW Centre prior to enrolling.
  • Obtain the Competency Based Assessment logbook from the Service NSW Centre.
  • Your current driver licence.
  • Your Competency Based Assessment logbook provided by a Service NSW Centre
  • A high visibility vest if you have one
  • Food for lunch (a fridge, microwave, tea, coffee and biscuits are provided)

You will need to use your own vehicle – please note the following:

  • Someone who is licenced to drive this class will need to accompany you or bring and collect the vehicle.
  • Your vehicle must be ACT or NSW registered. (It cannot be federally registered)
  • Must be 75% loaded – this load cannot be dangerous goods, livestock, or fluid (excludes busses) – we will require a weighbridge ticket.
  • Must have two or more seats, all fitted with full seatbelts.
  • We will require a copy of your vehicle registration papers with your enrolment forms.

The Final Competency Assessment is the practical test you must complete at the end of your HVCBA training.  Your trainer and assessor will be different people. In order to pass the assessment, you must demonstrate the skills you have learned in your HVCBA training and show that you can operate a heavy vehicle safely.

Students who are found competent will not be licenced to drive a Light Rigid vehicle just yet. Once you pass this assessment, the assessor will submit your results to Transport for NSW and keep your log book. You can then attend a Service NSW Centre in person to upgrade or obtain your new heavy vehicle licence. If you are deemed ‘Not Yet Competent’, you will need to enrol in another individual assessment at a later date and pay the associated fee.

To confirm your booking we will need your driver licence, HVCBA logbook, course enrolment form and payment. We do not accept any tentative bookings.

Any cancellations made less than 7 days prior to this course commencing will not be eligible for a refund. Failure to attend training on the day will also not result in a refund. We may, at our sole discretion, offer to rebook you on a later course upon the presentation of a medical certificate.

Make a booking

Before making a booking, you will need to answer some qualifying questions to determine if you meet the licence class prerequisites.

If you are eligible to enrol for this course, you will be directed to the booking page where you will need to upload the printed page with your details from your Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment Logbook and a copy of your current Driver Licence.  Please ensure you have this ready to complete the online booking.
